About Echo
Echo is a personal publication. The name comes from a belief about conversation: what you send out is what comes back. Open with judgment and you receive defence; open with curiosity and you receive candour.
The subjects, for now, are communication, relationships, and the self — how to listen, how to say things, how to be close to people who matter, and what to do with your own feelings. Topics like technology and money will follow. Life echoes in more than one register.
On sources
Everything here is written from scratch. Where a study, a statistic or someone else's idea is cited, the source has been checked individually and is linked at the foot of the piece so you can read the original.
This matters more than it should have to. A great deal of what circulates online as "translated from a foreign magazine" turns out to have no source at all — invented essays attributed to publications that never ran them. Several pieces here began as attempts to trace exactly such an article, found nothing, and were rebuilt on research that does exist.
English and Chinese
The full essays are written in Chinese. Each has an English edition — not a translation, but the same argument written for an English reader, shorter, with the research intact. Where you see a language switch in the header, both versions exist.
One necessary note
Nothing here is psychological, medical or professional advice. These are essays: a place to start thinking, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If you are in sustained distress, please talk to a professional. In mainland China, the national mental health support line is 12356. Elsewhere, look up your local crisis line.
